Mystery Tour

No, not me touring - but a special birthday celebration put together by my personal tour guide!  The itinerary focused on 70s bands The Go-Betweens and The Saints.

We drove toward Brisbane from Ipswich, listening to podcasts en route.  First stop was Robert Vickers Place (29 California Road, Oxley).  In 2019, the playground was named in honour of  former Go-Betweens bass guitarist.

We had morning tea at the nearby Ed Kuepper Park (at the corner of Lawson Street and Oxley Road, Oxley). There was a guitar tablecloth and homemade cupcakes decorated with mini album covers.

We crossed the Go-Between Bridge (surviving band members had attended the 2010 opening) and then made our way to Petrie Terrace.  

4 Petrie Terrace was once known as Club 76, where The Saints lived and performed. There's some history, here.

244 Petrie Terrace was another stop - where the "I'm Stranded" album cover photo was taken.

15 Caxton Street - Lefty's Music Hall, formerly Baroona Hall, which was an important music venue in the late 70s/early 80s.  The Go-Betweens had their first performance here.

We walked down to Roma Street (cos parking was tricky) to see the giant Saints mural, which was unveiled in 2017 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the "I'm Stranded" album. 

Lunch was at The Triffid, where there was another Saints reference on the Hero Wall.  What a great day out!

Making connections ...

Lots of good stuff happening behind the scenes.  Banshees hosted two Music Industry Development sessions, facilitated by our local Council in conjunction with QMusic.  I was on night-shift for both of those but Rebecca went along in March and again in April.  She enjoyed all the presentations, took notes to share with me - and chatted to a few local artists.  (I've since joined QMusic, though was already on their mailing list as I attended one of their songwriting events last year). Places to go!

July has been very busy. I released two songs.  One was a rewrite of "She Calls Me Back" (previously titled "The Mountain"). The other was one that needed serious remix/mastering, which is now titled "Got No Place To Go".  (It was previously "No Place to Go").  I am very happy with both results. It's so liberating when you see clearly that you don’t need to follow the industry conventions. As an independent artist I'm not bound by any recording company regulations. Along with those two releases, I continued participating in the "I heart Songwriting Club" and I'm writing furiously again. On top of that I've had a week of birthday celebration with various trips to enhance those celebrations.  I’m still following on with my live performances. Surprise!

I was road-tripping all of September and most of October.  11,561 kilometres in 56 days.  Eight weeks of awesome!   There were many, many highlights but when I checked my emails at Mount Surprise, I'd received three from the Australian Songwriting Association - and each of those indicated I had been shortlisted in a category of the current Songwriting Competition!  The categories were specified but not the songs.  However, I know my songs as I only entered three:- Got No Place To Go (Folk) She Calls Me Back (Ballad) You Draw Blood (Rock/Indie) The next stage of judging is to choose the Top 30 Finalists, and these will be published on the ASA website before the end of October. The Top 10 Finalists are to be announced at the National Songwriting Awards, which will be held in Sydney on Thursday 28 November.
