Singing Nik's (shortlisted) praises!

Earlier this year Nik joined the Australian Songwriting Association.  In May he entered three songs into their 40th annual Australian Songwriting Competition.  (This is the first year it has been open for international as well as national entries). 

He just received a very exciting phone call, advising "Breathe, Miss Sunshine" is shortlisted in one category - and "Burn" has made it to the Australian shortlist. These lists represent the top 60 songs for each category and are the first step in the judging process.

The top 30 songs for each category will be chosen in mid-November, with final judging to occur at some later stage in preparation for an Awards ceremony early next year.  There are some more details on the Australian Songwriters Association website, which describes the competition as "lively" and confirms that the "quality has been high and participation outstanding, so shortlisting is a great achievement".

What a week of amazing excitement!  Stay tuned!

July wrap-up!

July. What a great month. There’s been more photos, more videos, more comments and more live music!  The month kicked off with a couple of open mics around Brisbane. I decided to try and perform at these limited sets at least once a week. I ended up doing two sets a week - or nine shows through July. Lots of cheering, clapping and encouraging responses.  I've developed a new perspective on performing. I'm sticking with the songs I really like and am familiar with.  (Even though I write the songs, some fade a bit over time).  The latest song "You Draw Blood" is a crowd favourite.  I just need to get the production finished and release it officially.  My new business card has been a great addition. Folks at the shows are keen on the photo update and the QR code on the back, which links directly to this website/blog.  I finally subscribed to 4ZZZ radio after doing a tour through the station and meeting a few of the staff and DJs. Open sessions ...

  Half-way through the year already!  I finished June by going to a couple of open mic nights to play my songs. (Rebecca came along to chronicle my adventures). My main motivation for attending open mic events is to get reactions to how I’m performing - as well as responses to the songs themselves.   We arrived at Archive Boutique Brewery in West Side Brisbane on a Monday night. I played five songs and the crowd warmed to the more intense feel of the performance.  In the same week, we went to Stones Corner Hotel on Wednesday night.  I played three songs I'd played at Archive and I got the same enthusiastic reception. Stones Corner had a better feel as there were a lot more performers and larger crowd. Even though I played there at 10:00pm, there was still a decent crowd clapping and cheering.   It was great to get good comments from the next act to come up - and the crowd as I made my way back to our table.  I'm quite familiar with the songs I played, so I can really let go

There was more road-tripping in May cos we had front row seats to see Tommy Emmanuel at the Moncrieff Centre in Bundaberg!  Awesome night! I was on the 101FM Radio Logan the next week, when Stevie T played two of my songs ("Breathe, Miss Sunshine" and "How Much You Mean To Me") with a bit of a spiel about me as a local artist.  How good is that?! The month ended with more great news - another two songs shortlisted in the 2022 Australian Songwriting Contest! "As Time Goes By" made the Ballad shortlist while "Undercover Killer" was a Rock/Indie finalist.  Both these songs were products of my involvement with the I Heart Songwriting Club. That means they were each written within just one hour (or very close to it).   "Undercover Killer" is pretty close to my original draft.  "As Time Goes By" was only two verses initially but subsequently gained a bridge and outro.  Good songs don’t need a lifetime to write, just to prepare ...
