Once More Unto The Breach

This is a song I wrote about a man, a Polish man, in the second World War. He was a committed fighter pilot in the 303 Squadron, the highest scoring unit in the Battle of Britain. His name was Josef Frantisek.

I wasn't going to do this song but when I was in the midst of researching, I went to a market in Brisbane and was just talking to people.  I was talking to a guy, a painter, and said I was doing some research about Poland.  He said he was researching Poland.  I said I was writing a song about the 303 Squadron - and he asked, Frantisek?  It was the most amazing moment. He was goose-bumped all over.  Me, too.

    What a very interesting tale Nick. This is what i always believe is a driving point, the story.. goose bumps and the tale has already affected one person.. Awesome.

Songwriters Showcase ...

Just got back from Toowoomba after a lovely weekend centred around the Songwriters Showcase, which was held at the Cafe Guitar on Saturday afternoon.  Nine participating songwriters were on the whiteboard including the organiser, Peter Campbell.  I played "Breathe, Miss Sunshine" and "The Decision" (not yet released). I chose the second song based on the Country flavour of the event, as that song has an Australian Country Feel.  I was surprised how nervous I was, playing my own tunes, but I got through the performance with minimal chords misplaced and notes flattened. I collected another facebook friend and there was some positive feedback. Overall it was a successful first outing.  Most likely my next adventure will be the online Trimstone event in just over two weeks. I have been advised they would like four songs (if I pick the two short songs I played them), which sounds good to me.  I have no plans to go further with live performances. There are a few open ...

New Year, new songs!

I released "The Sun Sets" on 31 December and then "You Draw Blood" on January 21. "The Sun Sets" has been played on 5 Triple Z in South Australia and both songs have been receiving airplay on Brisbane's 4ZZZ. A great start to the New Year!  "You Draw Blood" has been performed regularly in open mics around Brisbane, since about June. I also played it my Live and Local spot at Banshees in October. Every performance has created strong positive reactions from all sorts of crowds, so I decided to enter the song into the ASA Songwriting Contest 2023 (along with "She Calls Me Back - The Mountain" and "No Place to Go").  Let's see what happens. Stevie T from Radio Logan played "Burn" the other Monday night.  The man has good taste - that song was a finalist in the 2020 ASA Contest!

Money Talks ...

February was busy!  "Money Talks" released on the 4th -  though had already played on 4ZZZ as a pre-release in late January.   "How Much You Mean to Me" (a 2021 release) was again included on Valentines playlists.  That song has been included on more playlists than any other of my others. It's also had the most exposure world-wide, particularly through the USA.  I entered two songs into the 2023 Needle in the Hay vinyl competition.  It was hard to choose but I went with "Breathe, Miss Sunshine" (which was a Top 30 finalist in the 2020 Australian Songwriting Competition) and one that I play regularly.   "You Draw Blood" was my other entry.  It's a very recent release, which I've performed regularly in open mics around Brisbane.  Every performance has created strong positive reactions from all sorts of crowds - and it's been getting some airplay, too.   Let's see what happens!
