The Mountain

Hi all - hope you are all well and safe.  I started my fourth album release program last night.  The first single, "The Mountain", released into all the streaming platforms - at the stroke of midnight. 

I already have “Only for You” ready to go (on 25 May) and the third single is also loaded for launch on 15 June. 

This first single evolved from a piece of music recorded by Rick Lisk. I worked from that chord progression and created "The Mountain".  

There's a video on Facebook which gives a bit of background about the song's development.  (Link to FB at the top of the page.  Worth a look for the stuff that doesn't make it to here).

Rick hails from Canada so the song is set amongst snow-capped mountains.  The song follows the life of a single parent with two children.  There is a drinking problem and a feeling of time running faster and faster as the kids grow up. This song inspires me every time I play it.

Just got back from Toowoomba after a lovely weekend centred around the Songwriters Showcase, which was held at the Cafe Guitar on Saturday afternoon.  Nine participating songwriters were on the whiteboard including the organiser, Peter Campbell.  I played "Breathe, Miss Sunshine" and "The Decision" (not yet released). I chose the second song based on the Country flavour of the event, as that song has an Australian Country Feel.  I was surprised how nervous I was, playing my own tunes, but I got through the performance with minimal chords misplaced and notes flattened. I collected another facebook friend and there was some positive feedback. Overall it was a successful first outing.  Most likely my next adventure will be the online Trimstone event in just over two weeks. I have been advised they would like four songs (if I pick the two short songs I played them), which sounds good to me.  I have no plans to go further with live performances. There are a few open mic

July wrap-up!

July. What a great month. There’s been more photos, more videos, more comments and more live music!  The month kicked off with a couple of open mics around Brisbane. I decided to try and perform at these limited sets at least once a week. I ended up doing two sets a week - or nine shows through July. Lots of cheering, clapping and encouraging responses.  I've developed a new perspective on performing. I'm sticking with the songs I really like and am familiar with.  (Even though I write the songs, some fade a bit over time).  The latest song "You Draw Blood" is a crowd favourite.  I just need to get the production finished and release it officially.  My new business card has been a great addition. Folks at the shows are keen on the photo update and the QR code on the back, which links directly to this website/blog.  I finally subscribed to 4ZZZ radio after doing a tour through the station and meeting a few of the staff and DJs. Open sessions ...

  Half-way through the year already!  I finished June by going to a couple of open mic nights to play my songs. (Rebecca came along to chronicle my adventures). My main motivation for attending open mic events is to get reactions to how I’m performing - as well as responses to the songs themselves.   We arrived at Archive Boutique Brewery in West Side Brisbane on a Monday night. I played five songs and the crowd warmed to the more intense feel of the performance.  In the same week, we went to Stones Corner Hotel on Wednesday night.  I played three songs I'd played at Archive and I got the same enthusiastic reception. Stones Corner had a better feel as there were a lot more performers and larger crowd. Even though I played there at 10:00pm, there was still a decent crowd clapping and cheering.   It was great to get good comments from the next act to come up - and the crowd as I made my way back to our table.  I'm quite familiar with the songs I played, so I can really let go
